Kurt Shaw, IFAA, AAM
Mr. Shaw is a preeminently qualified appraiser of art, antiques, furniture, and other valuable items. Mr. Shaw attained a bachelor's degree of fine arts with honors from Carnegie Mellon University. Mr. Shaw is a professional, listed artist whose work spans sculpture, oil paintings, watercolors, and photography. Mr. Shaw is represented by art galleries in the United States. Mr. Shaw served as the art critic for the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review for 16 years. For over 10 years, Mr. Shaw owned and operated Shaw Galleries, an art and antique gallery on Liberty Avenue in Downtown Pittsburgh. Mr. Shaw has worked as a professional appraiser since 2002.
Mr. Shaw's clients include individuals, families, estates, and institutions. Examples of institutional clients are the Audobon Society of Western Pennsylvania, Bethlen Communities, BNY Mellon, Dollar Bank, The Frick Pittsburgh, Grove City College, Merrick Art Gallery, Palmer Museum of Art, Penn State University, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, PNC Bank, and the National Football League Alumni Association.
"Mr. Shaw provided an invaluable and insightful appraisal of a stained glass heraldic window that aided in researching its provenance. Unusual in composition, Mr. Shaw correctly identified the outer portion of the window as early 20th-century manufacture. Moreover, he correctly identified the inset herald as late-Medieval period. Mr. Shaw's authentication sparked further curiosity and research which resulted in the discovery of no less than six publications that provided evidential proof of the window's Medieval provenance. Four sources detailed visual depictions of the window's original situ within an English Tudor mansion, nonextant. One 1911 publication describes the window as "sufficiently complete to display a typical example of an early Tudor glass painting." Kudos to Mr. Shaw for his fine eye, professionalism, and unparalleled expertise."
